Dress Code

Honoring tradition, Ballet School of Kingston requires a dress code for all of our classical training classes. The dress code delineates levels within the school and can provide a sense of connection and even excitement as students progress through different requirements. In some cases, such as with proper shoe fitting sizes, jewelry wearing and hair styling, dress codes can also ensure certain safety measures are in place for the well-being of your student.

  • Please note that underwear/panties are not normally worn under leotards.

  • Please write your student's name on all clothing/shoes.

  • No jewelry is allowed in class.  Necklaces, bracelets, anklets, fit-bits and other adornments are not permitted in class.  Acrylic nails are not permitted in the studio.

  • Ballet skirts, while very pretty, can be very distracting to young students in particular. They also obstruct the teacher's view of the pelvis/hips and make it more difficult to give accurate corrections.  On certain occasions, skirts are allowed by permission in the summer ballet program. At the discretion of the teacher, the Advanced classes are permitted to wear skirts for Pointe and Variations class, however, they are not required.

  • Dress code is required for in-person and zoom classes.

  • Please visit Performance Edge Apparel in Kingston or Balletomania in Poughkeepsie for purchasing attire. They stock our specific dress code requirements and great time and care has been given to making sure our students are able to purchase affordable clothing in the correct style and color. Pointe shoe fitting appointments can be made at Balletomania in Poughkeepsie and Saratoga Dance in Saratoga, NY. Please inquire about discount codes.

Important information regarding your student's hair:  All long hair must be pulled back away from the face and neck and secured tightly to the head. Barrettes and bobby pins are required for keepings bangs out of children's eyes.  Hair nets are highly recommended.  Short hair must be secured away from the dancer's face. Ponytails or braids capable of reaching a student's eyes are not allowed.  Students who are sent to class without their hair properly secured may be asked to sit out of class.  Student teachers are not responsible for helping dancers with their hair.  This must be done by the student themselves or a parent/guardian prior to class.
